Tanika, the gorgeous goofy-footed surfer, started surfing at age 9 in ‘Surfers Corner’ at Muizenberg Beach, Cape Town with her good friend Tarryn Chudleigh. Although her surfing skills are suited for shortboarding waves far more advanced and powerful than Muizenberg’s gentle swells, she still enjoys the occasional visit to the warmer waters of her original home break to play on a longboard with her friends.

Her favorite waves to surf in Cape Town are ‘Off The Wall’ in Sea Point and ‘Longbeach’ in Kommetjie (when it’s uncrowded). Internationally her favorite surfing spot is on Reunion Island.

On her recent trip to the world surfing games, she spoke of how well the South African surfing team got along together and how she struggled in her heats due to tricky surfing conditions because of a lack of swell and onshore winds. Nevertheless the outstanding performance by the team as a whole, especially Shaun Joubert who won gold the mens event, saw Team South Africa being crowned the ISA World Team Champions. South Africa triumphed over the other 23 national teams and 120 surfers at the event.
